About Tony
Read MorePhotography is a passion of mine that has had a very long incubation period. For as long as I can remember, I've lived between the lines of being an engineer and an artist. In high school, I excelled in science, but also wrote and performed for stage productions. In college, my first major was engineering, but my second was art. I painted in my dorm room but did engineering and production at the campus radio station. After college, my first job was at an audio/video studio. I cut sound effects and foley with precision, then used the studio to record my own music. When I helped start a new Internet service in 1993, I was both a system administrator and a web designer. With photography, digital especially, I've found a medium that satisfies both sides of my brain. The technical chops come easy for me - the real challenge is in always reaching out and growing as an artist. I hope it never stops.
My first subjects were cars and dancers. And while they seem to be such disparate subjects, I find that I use the same technique for getting my shot in either case. I'm trying to get the subject at a specfic moment in time, the peak of action for the manuever - and doing it while trying to take advantage of the subject's surrounding. For autocross, this peak action shows the car at the point of most suspension travel during a tight manuever. Getting the shot within the context of a slow-shutter pan gives it the appropriate backdrop. This moment leaves an image of the car, which seems to be moving appropriately, except for something thing that pops out at you.
Somehow that led me to weddings. I would always get asked about doing weddings. And for the longest time, I said "Weddings? No, not my thing..." I resisted, most wedding photographers didn't really seem to enjoy their job. I didn't need another *job*. But who knew? I found that I enjoy them as much as anything else and I get to be creative in a challenging setting. That's fun. There's a little bit of everything in dynamic wedding photography. Emotional drama, peaks of action and elaborate costumes and settings. The greatest joy in my photography is when I know people truly enjoy the images they see.
